Friedman & Springwater Announces the Retirement of Andrea T. Porter

Friedman & Springwater announced that Andrea T. Porter is retiring.  Andy practiced bankruptcy law for almost 35 years, specializing in business reorganizations, complicated liquidations in Chapter 11 cases, out-of-court “work-outs” and the adjustment of municipal debt in cases under Chapter 9 of the Bankruptcy Code.  During her career she represented debtors, creditors, creditors’ committees, and trustees in numerous and varied Chapter 11 cases.  She counts among her most interesting cases her work in Alaska, as insolvency counsel for the Haida tribe.   Andy’s work included representing hospital districts in Chapter 9 cases.  She confirmed Chapter 9 plans in the municipal bankruptcy cases of the West Contra Costa Healthcare District and the Los Medanos Hospital District and she represented the San Jose Medical Group, the first California medical practice of significant size to confirm a Chapter 11 plan of reorganization.  Before school districts became ineligible for bankruptcy, Ms. Porter represented labor unions in two Chapter 9 cases, the California Teachers Association in the San Jose Unified School District case and SEIU Local 790 in the Richmond Unified School District case.  Each union representation resulted in a negotiated labor agreement followed by the dismissal of the Chapter 9 case.

Andy was an active member of the Commercial Law and Bankruptcy section of the San Francisco Bar Association and was its chair in 1990-91. She served on the Committee of Lawyer Representatives of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California, and remains an emeritus member of the Board of Directors of the Bay Area Bankruptcy Forum for which she served as president in 1994-95.

Andy has also served as a resolution advocate on the panel of the Bankruptcy Dispute Resolution Program of the Northern District of California since the program’s inception in 1994.

Andy is a graduate of Stanford University and received her J.D., cum laude, from the University of Santa Clara School of Law.   She began her law career as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Seymour J. Abrahams, United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California.   Prior to joining Friedman & Springwater, Andrea Porter was a partner at Murphy Weir & Butler and Murphy Sheneman Julian & Rogers and Of Counsel at Foley & Lardner LLP.

“Andy will be greatly missed at the firm,” said Ellen Friedman. “She strengthened the firm’s bankruptcy practice and mentored our younger attorneys. As a leading bankruptcy practitioner, the breadth and width of her knowledge has provided guidance to all of us here.”
